Celebrating National Indigenous History Month

Five cultural institutions collaborate to elevate Indigenous voices, celebrate Indigenous cultures and advance Truth and Reconciliation.

June is National Indigenous History Month (NIHM), a celebration of the distinct cultures and traditions of the various First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, the original inhabitants and stewards of this land we now call Canada. It was established in 2009 to recognize the foundational role Indigenous peoples have had in Canada’s development, to celebrate the ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities and to honour their history, heritage, resilience and diversity. It is a time for all Canadians to learn and participate, and an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to celebrate, share and grow their cultures, instilling a deeper sense of pride in their Indigenous identity.

The Calgary Cultural Coalition for Truth and Reconciliation

Spearheaded by Werklund Centre, five leading cultural institutions in Calgary have come together to collectively elevate Indigenous voices, share Indigenous cultures, inspire curiosity and advance Truth and Reconciliation.

The Calgary Cultural Coalition for Truth and Reconciliation (CCCTR) is comprised of: Calgary Public Library, The Confluence, Heritage Park, National Music Centre and Werklund Centre. CCCTR creates opportunities to grow, learn and participate in active reconciliation, while helping to build stronger understanding, respect, accountability to, and compassion for Indigenous peoples. Each organization is guided in this work by Elders and Knowledge Keepers from Treaty 7 Nations.

These cultural institutions and social businesses actively work to help elevate Indigenous voices and celebrate Indigenous cultures. And while they have made significant headway, the belief amongst them is that collaboration is more effective by combining their diverse strengths and leveraging the reach of each organization. This is why, in June, each organization will host various programs and activities, open to the public, to celebrate Indigenous cultures.

Join the celebration

Calgary Public Library will host its opening NIHM ceremonies on June 1 and will host films, panel discussions and lunch and learns throughout the month; on June 21, the Confluence will lead the annual Walk for Reconciliation and have free admission to their exhibits; Heritage Park is hosting a powerful gathering and wellness series by the Matriarch Movement, Movement is Medicine, a session of meditation and connection, as well as a Sober After Party that mixes culture, fashion and nightlife; National Music Centre has launched its newest Speak Up! exhibit at Studio Bell and will have live music and free entry on June 21; and Werklund Centre will bring Echoes of the Land, a transcendent sound bath experience rooted in the rhythms of the land, for four performances at the end of the month, as well as a Makers Market and Fashion Showcase by Authentically Curated.

This grassroots effort makes its debut for NIHM in 2026 with plans for future collaborations. Most of the events in June are free, but some require tickets or registration.
