Worry Less, Sleep More

Black Sheep Mattress Co. puts quality craftsmanship at the heart of a good night’s sleep.

In 2011, Black Sheep Mattress Co. started from a simple idea: how do we build mattresses in a better way? That question is part of where the name Black Sheep comes from. Owner Christian Schmidt wanted a more sustainable way to make quality mattresses. That’s why Black Sheep takes an artisanal approach, handcrafting every product with non-toxic materials. The approach has been the Calgary company’s north star since day one.

Investing time and care

Every mattress at Black Sheep is custom built and handcrafted. It starts with a visit to the showroom to find the right model and firmness. “We have a pretty good idea of what works for people, but it’s really whatever the customer wants. Everything is made to order, and that way, we make exactly what they’re looking for,” says Schmidt.

The team of builders cuts and sews the fabric, prepares the springs, natural rubber, wool and cottons (depending on the model), and then it all comes together in the mattress case. The team then tufts the mattress (keeping all of the layers together) and performs a quality check on the finished product.

Although this method might limit the scale at which Black Sheep can produce mattresses, it invests time and, ultimately, care in the product to ensure customers get the best mattress. “We’re not chasing volume, we’re in pursuit of quality,” affirms Schmidt. “Plus, it gives us a greater sense of connection to our customers, and to the community, when we’re building something worth investing in.”

A mattress that’s good for you

Black Sheep evaluates all of its material sources to ensure the final products are natural and sustainable, and sourced locally when possible. The entire mattress is made with chemical-free materials such as natural latex, cotton and wool. The sheep providing the wool are humanely treated, and the wool is never bleached, dyed or chemically treated. Using a zipper case and thread tufting to hold everything together also eliminates the need for toxic glues and adhesives.

Black Sheep customers value their sleep. “It’s what brings them into the showroom — this idea that they’re adding something to the bedroom that is natural and healthy,” says Schmidt.

Built to last

Black Sheep’s commitment to quality lends itself to sustainability. By crafting mattresses designed to last, Black Sheep reduces the premature wear that sends millions of mattresses to the landfill every year. The company also runs a complimentary recycling program for customers in Calgary — when the team delivers your new Black Sheep mattress, they pick up your old one and bring it to Re-Matt Inc., which breaks it down into reusable materials.

Black Sheep’s focus on longevity and sustainability means customers get high-quality, healthy products for better sleep.

“We found a niche that customers appreciate,” says Schmidt. “Often, multiple generations shop with us. They come back when their kids are growing or when they need a mattress, maybe for the cabin. The relationships we build make it very rewarding. It feels like a community in a lot of ways.”
