Most Calgary Stampede attendees probably know The Big Four Roadhouse as one of the main Stampede concert venues, with headliners like Toque, TLC, De La Soul, Yung Gravy, Tom Morello and more this year. And while that’s certainly a good reason to check out this building on the Stampede grounds, it’s definitely not the only reason.
Whether you need a break from the sun or rain, are trying to escape the outdoor crowds or are just looking for a different Stampede experience to try, The Big Four Roadhouse has plenty to offer beyond music. There are some spots to eat and drink that you won’t find anywhere else on the grounds, plenty of seating, fun activities like arcade games and more.
Here’s a look at some of the cool experiences you can check out in The Big Four Roadhouse during Stampede this year.
Order a drink at Bar Nineteen Twelve
While the Stampede grounds have a few wine garden offerings, there’s also something for cocktail fans. Tucked inside the upper level of The Big Four Roadhouse, Bar Nineteen Twelve is a sophisticated cocktail lounge where you can enjoy fun on-theme drinks like The Purple Spur or Saddle Sour (as well as wine and beer) with elevated bites like tableside steak tartare, char siu pork belly baos, AAA Alberta filet mignon and more. During Stampede, take advantage of the daily happy hours from 2 to 4 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. There’s also live music at select times in the evenings.
Grab a bite at The Range Food Hall
The midway isn’t the only spot to grab a tasty bite during Stampede. Head to The Big Four’s lower level to check out The Range Food Hall, which is home to several food vendors and lots of seating where you can enjoy a meal out of the sun. Whether you’re craving pretzels, burgers, perogies or Vietnamese food, there’s sure to be something that will satisfy your hunger. This area is also home to the Kitchen Theatre Stage.
Play arcade games at the 8-Bit Roundup
There are lots of fun games on the midway, but if arcade games like pinball and Pac-Man are more your thing, you’re in luck. The 8-Bit Roundup is a new addition to Stampede this year, and is located on The Big Four’s lower level beside The Range Food Hall. Grab a bite to eat, then try your luck on one of the dozens of modern and vintage games.
Ride a mechanical bull
See if you have what it takes to be a rodeo superstar at Battle of the Bulls, a mechanical bull-riding experience on the upper level of The Big Four. This experience, presented by Calgary’s Banded Peak Brewing, promises plenty of fun whether you try your luck or just watch others compete. The area also has lots of seating, bars where you can grab drinks and food offerings.
