Ways to Occupy Your Kids During the Alberta Teachers’ Strike

From day camps to museums, here are a few options to keep the kids busy in Calgary while school’s on pause.

Heritage Park School Disruption Day Camps

Ages: 6 to 12
Price: $75 per student, per day (GST exempt)

Heritage Park’s Disruption Day Camps give kids in grades 1 to 6 a chance to explore, create and learn through themed, hands-on activities. Camps run weekdays during the disruption, with new dates posted each Wednesday and registration up to 9 p.m. the night before.

Military Museums Teachers’ Strike Fall Camp

Ages: 8 to 13
Price: $70 per day

From October 6 to 10 and 14 to 17, 2025, the Military Museums are offering camps where kids can learn about military history through hands-on exhibits, games and curriculum-based programs.

Calgary Humane Society Day Camps

Ages: 6 to 12
Price: Starting from $290

The Calgary Humane Society is offering week-long day camps for students in grades 1 to 6 who want to learn more about animals. Kids can meet animals up close, play games and learn about how to care for animals.

City of Calgary School Disruption Day Camps

Ages: 5 to 12
Price: Starting at $209

Enjoy a fun-filled week of games, sports, crafts and outdoor adventures. Activities may include park trips, guest visits and water play.

YMCA School Service Disruption Support

Ages: 6 to 17
Price: YMCA members: $20; without YMCA membership: $24; Drop-in fees vary

Kids aged 6 to 9 can take part in three-hour sessions filled with sports, crafts and outdoor fun. YMCA staff will also lead engaging activities and games for youth ages 10 to 17, with youth rooms varying by branch. Youth can also drop in to use weight floors or pools with age-appropriate access and staff support available.

Cooking Lessons with Julie Van Rosendaal

Ages: 4 to 18
Price: Free

Every day during the strike (except October 14 and 17), local food journalist Julie Van Rosendaal will host a free cooking or baking class online at 4 p.m. suitable for kids and teens of all ages. Kids get to practice cooking along with math, science and reading, and have some fun along the way.

Calgary Public Library Support

Ages: 5 to 18
Price: Free

Calgary Public Library is supporting families during this period of disrupted learning, offering free virtual and digital resources such as Brainfuse and SOLARO that follow the Alberta curriculum. The library provides engaging tools and programs such as tutoring, study guides and test preparation designed to keep children supported.

Creative Kids Museum at Telus Spark Science Centre

Ages: 0 to 8
Price: $32.95 for adults, $29.95 for seniors (65+). $23.95 for children (3 to 17), free for children 2 and under

The Creative Kids museum offers 10,000 square feet of hands-on-fun for young children. Kids can splash in the water zone, build and create at activity tables, climb, read or make music on the bubble piano.

Sport Hub

Ages: 5 to 18
Price: Free

Across Calgary’s community gyms and neighbourhoods, Sport Hub gives kids and teens the chance to get active and play sports. Coaches from local sport organizations lead lessons in basketball, indoor soccer, tennis, volleyball and flag rugby, with all equipment provided. Most activities take place in the evening, while basketball sessions also run in the morning.

Storybook Theatre’s School of Rock Musical

Ages: 6 and up
Price: $28 for children (6 to 17) and $33 for adults. Prices do not include GST or $3 service fee.

Running from October 3 to November 1, 2025, this musical based on the popular movie of the same name follows Dewey Finn, an aspiring rock star who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prep school. What starts as a scheme turns into a lively story about music and courage.

Studio Bell

Ages: All ages
Price: $24.50 for adults, $19.50 for students/seniors (65+), $16.50 for youth (4 to 12), free for children ages 3 and under

At Studio Bell, 22 exhibition spaces across five levels celebrate music through sights, sounds and interactive experiences. Highlights include the Kimball Theatre Organ and the Canadian Music Halls of Fame. All included with general admission.
