Calgary's Best Neighbourhoods 2011: Best Access to Grocery Stores

As part of our second annual Best Neighbourhoods survey we found the best Calgary hoods for shopping for food.

We’re a pragmatic lot here in Calgary. That can be seen in the categories respondents said were the most important factors and amenities that make a neighbourhood appealing.

According to our survey, the second most-important amenity to have in or near a neighbourhood is a grocery store. In fact, it ranked so highly in last year’s survey, we altered the data we collected this year to include the locations of all major grocery stores.

Once again, we gave each neighbourhood two points for each major grocery store inside its boundaries, and a point for each grocery store in an adjoining neighbourhood. We also asked survey respondents for their opinion on their community’s access to grocery stores and Leger Marketing crunched the numbers to create an overall score.

The following five communities ranked the highest in terms of access to grocery stores.

1. Beltline
2. Haysboro
3. Acadia
4. McKenzie Towne
5. Varsity
