This Month, We’re Excited to Eat Chinese Cocktail Buns, Cassoulet Poutine and Nashville Hot Chicken
Here are five things we want to eat and drink in Calgary this April.
April brings the start of food truck season, Poutine Week and more. Here are five things we’re excited to try this month.
Chinese Cocktail Buns from The Muze Coffeehouse
The Muze Coffeehouse opened in Chinatown in February in the space that formerly housed Jing Jing Bakery. It serves Rosso coffee and traditional Chinese baked goods, like these sweet, buttery cocktail buns with coconut filling (that tastes kind of like a sugar cookie). We dare you to eat just one.

Cassoulet Poutine from Diner Deluxe
Calgary’s annual Poutine Week is happening from April 20 to 28, and Diner Deluxe’s Cassoulet Poutine is making our mouths water. It’s got the main ingredients (fries, Quebec cheese curds and gravy), plus braised pork shoulder, chorizo, cannellini beans, diced veggies, basil hollandaise and an egg. This dish will be available at both the Edmonton Trail and Aspen Landing locations.

Nashville Hot Chicken from Zilford’s Fried Chicken
There may still be snow on the ground, but this month is the kick off to food truck season. Since our spring days can be chilly, we’re most interested in biting into some Nashville hot chicken from Zilford’s Fried Chicken truck, which hit the streets for the first time last spring. It’ll make you sweat and warm you up from the inside out. Check for the truck’s current location on its social media or through the Street Food App.
Vegan Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream from Made By Marcus
Here’s a scoop of ice cream we can feel slightly less guilty about. Made By Marcus’s newest vegan flavour is chocolate fudge brownie cashew. According to the shop’s Instagram account, it will be “sticking around for a while,” but we’d suggest getting some sooner rather than later just in case.

Plainsbreaker from Banded Peak Brewing
Calgary’s Banded Peak Brewing just won gold for “light, hoppy, sessionable beer” at the first annual Alberta Beer Awards. So if the experts say it’s good, you know it’s good. We plan on drinking this on patio at The Ship (currently on tap) on the next sunny day.
