Julie Roth has never been afraid to take risks for fashion. Her attention-grabbing looks (think purple hair and sequined blazers) have garnered many second glances over the years, especially while she worked a corporate job in downtown Calgary. These reactions only bolstered her fervour for style. Her motto, “always wear sequins on a Monday,” certainly made her stand out. “I wanted to start ruffling some feathers. I felt like I had something to say with my fashion, but I needed a platform to say it,” she says about her decision to start her fashion blog in 2015.

The blog, Stylebyjr, quickly amassed a loyal group of followers, all with an interest in what she would wear next (which included both ruffles and feathers, and of course an abundance of sequins). “I just love wearing things that make me happy. I don’t dress for anybody else,” she says. These days, she’s more active on Instagram but she plans to restart the blog at some point.

With her bold look that is unapologetically her own, Roth is now an established Calgary stylist, with clients including CF Chinook Centre, Winners, Hudson’s Bay and Avenue magazine. “I push the envelope because I feel like that’s why I’m being hired for the job,” she says of her styling work. “I take the concept and put my own spin on it.”
