2016 was a great year for Calgary’s dining and shopping scenes, but there are plenty more good things to come in the new year. Here are 10 restaurants and stores you can expect to open in Calgary this year.
Bike and Brew
Bike and Brew is bringing cycling and coffee together under one roof. Set to open its doors in Bridgeland this spring, the 2,600-square-foot space will offer bike repair services, bicycles from brands like Kona, Apollo, Masi and Del Sol for sale, cycling accessories and some lifestyle apparel. There will also be a coffee shop area with seating for 15, which will serve Fratello coffee and tasty bites like sandwiches and pastries. But don’t worry – you don’t have to be a cyclist to visit Bike and Brew. This community-minded gathering spot is open to anyone, whether you need to get your bike fixed, simply want a cup of coffee or both.

Blush Lane Organic Market
Blush Lane already has a Calgary store in Aspen Woods, and opened its second one in Bridgeland in the fall of 2016. Next, it’s planning to open a location in Marda Loop in early 2017. Like its other locations, the approximatley 11,000-square-foot market will offer local and organic produce, deli meats, grocery items, health and body products and more.
Craft Beer Market
Originally slated to open last year, Craft Beer Market will now be opening its second Calgary location in the spring of 2017. The restaurant will be located between Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware at Southcentre Mall, and will feature a patio on the main floor. Stop by to try one of the more than 100 craft beers on tap or to fill your stomach with some tasty fare.

Madison’s 12|12
Madison’s 12|12 is coming to the Inglewood neighbourhood this year. Designed by Frank Architecture & Interiors, the 71-seat restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will offer craft nachos and salads, cocktails, beer and more. Madison’s 12|12 will also have a 49-seat patio.

Mari Bakeshop
If you smell something delicious coming from East Village, it probably means Mari Bakeshop, which plans to open early on in 2017, has opened its doors. Designed by BIOI, the modern, 22-seat bakeshop will offer baked goods and pastries like roll cakes, choux pastries, sandwiches and quiches. It will also be serving Fratello coffee. There will even be loaves of fresh bread that you can buy to take home with you too.

Po-ke
Calgary’s first eatery dedicated to poke, a Hawaiian dish that commonly features raw fish, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions and more on top of rice, is set to open on February 1st. Expect customizable poke bowls, sushi burritos and more.

Regal Cat Cafe
Cat lovers, prepare yourselves – Kensington will soon be home to Calgary’s first cat cafe. Come spring, you’ll be able to play with cats from the MEOW Foundation inside of Regal Cat Cafe. That’s all we know for now, but stay tuned for more details soon.

Rosso Coffee Roasters
2016 was a busy time for Rosso Coffee Roasters, who opened three new locations in Inglewood, the National Music Centre and on 17 Ave. S.E. throughout the year. It’s currently working on what will be its seventh location, set to open on 20th Avenue North around the end of February or beginning of March.

Simons
This March, Calgarians will finally be able to shop at the latest location from Qubcois retailer Simons in downtown Calgary. Spread throughout multiple floors in the historic Lancaster Building and TD Square, the store will be a huge one at 95,000 square feet. Calgary’s Simons location was designed by McKinley Burkart, and the space will feature a skylight, walnut staircases, and murals and artwork by Calgary artists. Shop for stylish men’s and women’s apparel, accessories and home decor, then finish your visit with a drink at ve Caf inside the store.
Untitled Champagne Lounge
The team behind The Derrick is opening an approximately 2,000-square-foot champagne lounge right next door to the downtown restaurant in the new year. Along with small bites, Untitled Champagne Lounge will offer handcrafted sparkling cocktails and 30 different kinds of Champagne from brands like Piper-Heidsieck, Champagne Pommery, Ruinart, Armand De Brignac and more. Look for this spot to open some time in January.
