A Bloody Caesar is a Calgary original. It was invented by a bartender at the former Calgary Inn (now The Westin Calgary) in 1969.
The savoury cocktail provides a tasty dose of three food groups, fruit and protein (Clamato juice) and alcohol (vodka), and traditionally includes a generous dash of hot sauce.
We round-up five of Calgary’s best.
Design District Urban Tavern
District marries Clamato with its true love, bacon. District’s Bacon Caesar is a spicy, bacony slurp served in a mason jar. Some chewing is required.
Mango Shiva
The Mango Shiva Tandoori Spiced Caesar offers an exotic take on the savoury beverage. Pop in for Mango Shiva’s weekend brunch and try it for yourself.
Mission Diner
The Fourth Street hotspot is a Caesar-lovers paradise, offering not one but eight concoctions to choose from. Try the Bacon Caesar rimmed with real bacon crumbs or the extra-spicy, wasabi-laced Samurai Caesar.
National
Available in 500ml or one litre sizes and garnished with a prawn and cheddar cube, National’s Caesar is a meal in a glass. In homage to its beer hall roots, it comes with a splash of IPA.
Unicorn Pub
The Unicorn has been slinging Caesars since 1979. Three tasty options include The Original, Hotter Than Hell and the Unicorn Deluxe. Try the horseradish-flavoured, hot sauce-spiked Unicorn Deluxe.
