Hooray Foods’ bacon strips ($10) are minimally processed and contain just eight simple ingredients: coconut oil, rice flour, tapioca starch, liquid smoke, umami seasoning, maple syrup, salt and beet juice concentrate. The bacon flavour comes from the mix of umami, salt and liquid smoke, while the maple syrup adds a hint of sweetness. And, since the processing results in 80 per cent fewer emissions than the meat variety, these plant-based strips are as sustainable as they are delicious.
To prepare, simply heat a pan to medium-low and cook for 90 seconds on each side, flipping every 30 seconds until crispy. The bacon cooks in its own fat, so there’s no need to add extra oil, which helps keep the calories to just 60 per strip.
