If you can’t decide what to drink at a restaurant or brewery, a flight could be your best option. Flights usually feature smaller pours of three or four different kinds of a drink, allowing you to experience a range of flavours in one sitting. Here are five places in the city were you can get a drink flight featuring beer, mezcal, whisky and more.
There are a lot of places in Calgary that offer flights of beer, but one of the most original and affordable ones can be found at Cold Garden’s tasting room. The Inglewood microbrewery offers flight-skis, which feature four five-ounce glasses of beer served on an old ski. You can choose your own beers (we recommend trying the All-Nighter Vanilla Cappuccino Porter) or let the staff choose for you. The best part of all? You get to try four different beers for only $6.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to treat yourself, consider ordering a flight of Champagne or wine from any of Vin Room’s three locations across the city. Each one offers three Champagne flights, three red wine flights and three white wine flights. If you already have a few favourites, you can also create your own flight from the list of by-the-glass options. At Vin Room’s newest location at the YYC Calgary International Airport, you can also get cognac and scotch flights.
In early March, Native Tongues Taqueria introduced flights of mezcal, a distilled liquor made from Mexican agave plants., to its menu. There are three different flight options, each featuring one and a half ounces of three different mezcals. The flights are themed around agave espadin flavours, barrel aged mezcals or mezcals made with rarer or notable agave species. The flights range from $15 to $30.
Sake is the national drink in Japan, and you can try it in flight form at this downtown Japanese restaurant. Goro + Gun offers five different flights that range in price from $12 to $16, and each one features three one-ounce glasses of sake. The best thing is that even if you eventually try all five flights on the menu, you can always stop by on Thursdays for Flight Night. That’s when you can get a special $10 sake flight, which has a new theme every week.
Buchanan’s stocks hundreds of malt whiskys, so it’s only natural that you try a few in the form of a whisky flight. Every week, the restaurant offers a differently themed flight featuring three different whiskys. Past themes have included three differently-aged whiskys from one distillery, three whiskys that are the same age, whiskeys with sherry finishes and more. You can order one any day of the week, or stop by during Whisky Wednesdays to get your flight at a cheaper price. Prices vary depending on the whisky selections that week.
