There’s a new athletics brand in Calgary that wants to help its customers embrace fearlessness. Agụ Athletics is an apparel company that’s been in the works for around two years and the brainchild of fitness enthusiast JohnMary “JM” Igbelina. The word Agụ has two meanings to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria depending on how it’s styled: “lion(ess)” and “hungry.” Igbelina sees the combination of these two things as a certain type of fearless nature.
Agụ wasn’t originally intended to be an apparel company. Igbelina, who played football for his high school’s team, started sharing his workout journey under the name on Instagram in 2018. Friends began asking for workout plans and the account gained traction. It seemed like a logical next step to create something stylish to wear while making gains at the gym.
Right now, you can order items including matching leggings and crop tops, dual-layer athletic shorts and a t-shirt. Each piece sports the signature Agụ logo of a lion. Some styles from the first drop are sold out of certain sizes already — act quickly if you’d like to get some for yourself. There are also a number of workout plans for sale, including an at-home plan for just $5.
