If you put together horses, skiing and big fur coats, you get “the fastest growing winter sport in North America,” a.k.a., skijoring.

In skijoring, fast-moving horses with riders pull skiers and snowboarders over a series of jumps or obstacles to show off their skills in the air. For riders and spectators, fashion is a crucial part of the event, giving people a chance to show off their winter western style.

Skijor Canada’s skijoring events have become a winter staple for Albertans, with thousands flocking to the events in their best outfits. Skijor Canada recently held a skijoring event at the SnowDays Festival in Banff, and now, the fun is coming back to Calgary.

SkijorDue, Skijor Canada’s annual Calgary event, returns on February 21 and 22, 2026 at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland for the East End Cold Spell winter festival.

What to Expect at SkijorDue 2026

This two-day skijoring event features 20 different skijor teams. Enjoy the festivities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with performances at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m both days.

In addition to skijoring, the experience features a makers market, fondue, food trucks, craft beers and more. The festival also hosts spectator style awards that celebrate the best outfits. There’s an official after party both evenings that will keep the fun going at Whiskey Rose Saloon.

What to Wear

When it comes to dressing for SkijorDue, go big or go home. A bold, western-inspired look is the key to an eye-catching skijoring outfit.

Start with a pair of denim jeans, leather pants or even suede slacks for your base layer — extra points if you add fringe. Next, layer up with familiar classics like plaid or animal print.

The star of the show all comes down to your coat. Whether you go big with furs and fuzzy collars or keep things a bit more low-key with fringed leather or suede, this is your skijor statement piece.

Finish off your look with smaller details like an interesting belt and buckle, a fur or cowboy hat and a pair of boots.

If you’re looking for outfit inspiration, check out Skijor Canada on Instagram to see how other spectators (including many Calgarians) dressed up for the recent Banff skijoring event.

Where to Shop

Calgary businesses make it easy to find a skijor-approved outfit. Shop from local businesses and markets selling vintage clothing like Wild Rabbit Vintage, Rein It In Brand or Seconds Collective for all your fringe and fur needs.

You can also shop with official SkijorDue partners like Alberta Boot Co. and Cody and Sioux for new pieces.
