Age: 36
Occupation: Co-artistic director, Kensington Sinfonia
In 2021, Genevieve Micheletti was told that the Kensington Sinfonia’s aging audience meant that the organization could either live differently or die.
As co-artistic director, she redirected the organization’s mandate from focusing on traditional programming that prioritized centuries-old classics to new works by local, gender-diverse and BIPOC musicians. Under her direction, Kensington Sinfonia grew from holding six concerts per year to producing 25 collaborative projects annually.
By championing new works, Micheletti is creating a library of music written and premiered in Calgary. With 20 such projects and eight recorded albums under her belt (including one Juno-nominated album and one Grammy-nominated one) — she is establishing Calgary as a destination for up-and-coming musicians and composers.
“Why not redefine our canon by creating it?” says Micheletti.
