Mujja Alloba helped trans and gender-diverse people across Egypt, Sudan and Kenya access health care for years before she came to Canada as a refugee in 2025. Today, she spearheads access to health care for trans and gender-diverse newcomers in Calgary through her non-profit organization Almees.
Her five-person Almees team of 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees connects trans newcomers with doctors and helps them find gender-affirming care and mental health support. They serve 80 to 90 participants per year and have partnered with organizations like Skipping Stone Foundation. Alloba is also a researcher at the Cumming School of Medicine.
“I saw [in Calgary] a city where they were doing serious work on newcomer health and overall migration, and I just wanted to be a part of that,” says Alloba.
