Calgary may not be the dream destination for most finance professionals, but Scarlett Crockatt is not one to follow the well-trodden path. Rather than striving for Bay Street, Crockatt chose to pursue her career ambitions in her hometown. “Calgary has shaped who I am,” she says. “People are approachable, focused on giving back to the community and building long-term relationships.”
Over the last 15 years, Crockatt has uplifted Calgary businesses through her expertise in strategic finance, mergers and acquisitions, improving returns on equity and modernizing business models. She has held executive leadership roles at a myriad of companies, including Scotiabank and Scotiabank subsidiary Roynat Capital. For close to a decade, she has supported University of Calgary finance students through guest lectures, case competition judging, mentoring and other initiatives. “I take seriously my responsibility to open doors for the people coming behind me,” she says.
In April, Crockatt took on the role of CFO at Calfrac Well Services, becoming one of the youngest women to join the C-suite of a major publicly traded company in the oil and gas sector. Across Canada, women in finance are rare, and even fewer hold a top leadership position. At the financial helm of Calfrac, a multinational oilfield service provider headquartered in Calgary, Crockatt uses her keen financial acumen to define ambitious goals and steer the $1-billion company towards them.
“I’m a builder,” she says. “I like to build, I like to grow, I like to take things to the next level.” Her focus is not on the money itself, but on the opportunities that wealth creates. “I believe that finance can create benefits for individuals, families and communities,” she says. “It can create a taxation base for the country that supports social programs and health care.”
