Calgarian Mack Andrews and Vancouver-based Jeffrey Noble, both entrepreneurs, knew traditional home care was failing many elderly and disabled Calgarians. The pair partnered with Calgary physician Charles Wong to build a care model with direct physician involvement, so that clients receive facility-level care without going to the hospital. In less than two years, their company, HomeFree Homecare, has delivered life-changing at-home care to more than 200 Calgary seniors and prevented caregiver burnout for countless family members. The model also provides a welcome change of work environment for experienced medical professionals; HomeFree employs more than 100 health-care and support workers and pay all a living wage.
“We believe we have saved our system, in a year and a half of operating, well over 10,000 acute and long-term care bed days,” Wong says. “That translates to millions of dollars of health systems savings.”
