Like many second-generation Chinese Canadians, Carrie Yap was encouraged by her family to pursue a stable career. She earned a master’s in urban design, but when her day job left her with a creative hole, Yap mended it by learning millinery (hat-making) and constructing intricate headpieces inspired by traditional Chinese designs.
In 2020, she founded Yap Sister Studio. Yap’s embroidery is meticulous, earning her accolades like exhibitions at The Confluence.
She also co-founded the Chinatown Pop-Up Movie Club, an event series showcasing Chinese culture through movies. Her work weaves together municipal action, community organizing and art.
“Each of these things represents a part of me,” says Yap. “I’m proud that I’ve carved my own identity and taken control in the space where I want to be heard.”
