Located in the deep southeast, this compact, elegant restaurant is a delightful addition to an area dominated by chains and big-box stores. Karma's version of paneer pakoras is a treat for the eyes (and the taste buds), featuring layers of cheese and mint chutney coated in chickpea batter and fried. From the traditional clay oven, there’s chicken tikka with chunks of tender, juicy white meat marinated in traditional spices. The vindaloo chicken tikka is a variation on the above, but kicked up many notches in the heat department.

What Mirchi lacks in size it more than makes up for in flavour, with the bold flavours from Northern India and Pakistan packing a punch. They specialize in kebabs, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s all there is. From butter chicken to pakoras to kikka to kufti, there are more than enough reasons to justify standing in line. Or perhaps better yet, order online and have it delivered to your door.

Mount Everest Restaurant

Formerly called Delhi Darbar, located in a non-descript building on 16th Avenue N.E. just east of Centre Street, it’s easy to drive by Mount Everest Restaurant. Don’t. The menu offers a huge selection of both vegetarian and meat entrees representing the cuisines of India and Nepal, as well as a short list of “fusion” dishes. Can’t decide what to eat? There is a lunch buffet every weekday, and an inexpensive dinner buffet Monday through Wednesday.

The extensive menu at Namskar features seekh lamb kebabs, multani chicken tikka, and, always the fan favourite, butter chicken, which comes in a velvety, tomato-based sauce. The generous portions, made using fresh ingredients and house-blended Asian herbs and spices, will leave you fully satisfied. The spicy, succulent tandoori chicken is prepared traditionally — boiled in yogurt and spices and roasted in the tandoor oven.

This Mission-area mainstay offers a warm and stylish dining room with a view of the kitchen in which you can watch the chefs bake naan bread in the authentic tandoor oven. Rajdoot brings home all the classic Indian dishes with their massive menu, but if you can’t choose just one, stop by for the lunch buffet and sample everything and anything.
